I'm a mother of three little monkeys (7, 5 and 3) and I teach at a bilingual secondary school in Pembrokeshire, Wales
I've always enjoyed experimenting with digital devices, and in 2012 "Project eDdysg" was born at Ysgol y Preseli, a project I founded and have led ever since. Simply, the aim of this project is to focus on exploring the potential of technology as a means of helping our pupils to learn. This Project included recruiting 'Digital Leaders' at the school: a group of pupils who are keen to help the school make progress in this field.
By now, and with the help of our excellent Digital Leaders, I have succeeded in providing training for many groups of people, including:
- a 3-day "Prosiect eDdysg" event, providing hands-on workshops for teachers from across Wales (40 teachers attended)
- training for "Pembrokeshire Digital Champions" (Pembs secondary teachers)
- workshops for our feeder schools' teachers and pupils
- workshops for Aberystwyth University PGCE Students
- training for Ysgol y Preseli staff
- training for Ysgol y Strade (Geography Dept)
In July 2014 Ysgol y Preseli was awarded the "Highly Commended Award" for "Innovative Use of Digital Technology" (Secondary) for our use of Augmented Reality in Geography lessons. We are currently embarking on a 'Bring Your Own Device' scheme for our 6th Form students, an exciting new venture for us.
I have also been fortunate enough to be part of the Research Team with WISEKIDS which explored the digital media habits and digital literacy of Year 9 pupils across Wales. The full research findings will be presented at the end of September.
What next?
Along with continuing the above work, I also aim to help nursery schools and primary schools. I am currently devising iPad workshop programmes for both. In the future, my aim is to be able to help advise parents, too, as it is clear that most parents would like to understand more about parenting in a digital age.
